Anbernic has confirmed the imminent release of its latest retro gaming handheld, the RG Rotate, featuring a unique flip-out display that transforms from a compact square into a full gamepad. Priced starting at $88, the device is set to ship within weeks, according to company teasers shared on social media.
The RG Rotate revives the classic "flip-phone" design for gaming, with a 3.5-inch square screen that rotates upward to reveal physical controls underneath. This form factor, popularized by the Motorola Flipout smartphone, is seeing a resurgence as dedicated gaming hardware.
“The RG Rotate is a direct response to demand for portable retro consoles that don’t compromise on ergonomics,” said a company representative in a press statement. “By flipping the display, users get a large screen in a pocket-friendly body.”

Anbernic, a leading maker of Android-based retro handhelds, teased the RG Rotate earlier this month via its official channels. The device follows a wave of flip-out gadgets, including a similar phone concept from FROG Technologies last month.
The RG Rotate runs Android 11 and is expected to support emulators for systems up to the PlayStation 1 and Nintendo 64. It will be available in two color variants: classic gray and transparent black.
